CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Cassandra

I had no doubts as to Oliver’s teaching abilities. My doubts came with my ability to pick up on some of the magic being taught directly to me. The teleporting lessons had been no different. As it turned out I teleported us to everywhere except the campus, so as of yesterday, we started hoofing it back to the academy.

“None of us except Oliver figured it out. Don’t get down on yourself, Cass.” Braeden held my hand as we walked. The others were up ahead of us, Nicolette between Oliver and Dash. Kyler had shifted an hour earlier and darted off into the woods to run. He promised to meet up with us later.

“Yeah, but when the shit hits the fan again, everyone, including the students at the academy, need to have trust in my abilities.” I squeezed his hand. “I’m just not used to so many people counting on me.”

“I was thinking about our parents last night.” He cleared his throat. He always had trouble talking about them. “Yours and mine both would be proud of us. Neither of us are perfect, but we care about people, and that’s what they wanted. Yeah, we need to do better, but I think for the most part we’re right where we should be.”

“You know, with all the mystery surrounding our lives right now, the one mystery we never figured out is who killed them.” I’d thought about it more than once. “When this is over and we’ve graduated, I want us to start asking some questions. I want us to find out exactly what kind of mission they were on.”

“I think the five of us can do that, Cass.” He put his arm around me, and we briefly shared a kiss. “Remember, everything we do we do together.”

“And that’s why I want this thing between all of us to work.” I motioned at Nicolette. “You think we can trust her?”

“I talked to Oliver again last night. He said if she didn’t sell us out to Estelle she never would. So yeah, I think we can.”

“You do realize I can sense when you have something on your mind. Your energy fluctuates as you try to decide if you should share what you know.” I stuck my hand in his back pocket and squeezed his ass. “So what is it?”

“Whatever it is Oliver isn’t telling us, I’m almost positive it has something to do with Edius.” Braeden scratched his head, and we all stopped when Kyler bounced from the woods. He licked my hand, and Braeden tried to shew him away. Kyler shifted, and Braeden moaned. “Your clothes, Kyler.” He turned to me. “We’ll talk later.” Braeden caught up with the others, leaving me with the naked Kyler.

“You’re hard again,” I said.

“Yeah, the wind blew.” He glanced at the others, including Nicolette who was checking out his ass. “Why don’t you send them on ahead. You and I can go for a run.”

“I still haven't mastered the shifting magic.”

“I have a little secret.” He smiled.
